That skit is hilarious! I was a spelling bee kid in grade school, so it has special meaning for me. Have you ever seen the documentary Spellbound?

ReplyDeleteI've been out of the SNL funk for a long time. I probably haven't been a regular since the Church Lady days.
I missed that one, did they pretend they were spelling the word in the air, or use the back of their number board to spell? (Can you tell that I've seen a few of those National Spelling Bees on TV--I'm totally hooked.)
ReplyDeleteI haven't had TV in my house for about five years. Most of the time I don't miss it at all. It's just too much advertising and junk, I say. I do miss it twice a year, when it's time for conference. And I miss it right now. I want to watch SNL again!
ReplyDeleteGeo - yes, I've seen it, and, Wendysue, if you haven't, I'd ABSOLUTELY recommend it to someone who's hooked on spelling bees! It's great.
ReplyDeleteLyle - I read that post, and I think the accent skit is a really good idea. I don't know Ben, even though I've commented there a couple of times.
Angie - We went for a few years without television and finally got it last fall - THE DAY before conference (with our kids getting older, I thought it would benefit them to watch conference rather than listen to it on the radio one more time - although I prefer listening to it on the radio in my room while I clean). I have missed years of SNL but I had recorded this episode with Jack Black hosting and Neil Young as the musical guest - and the gem for me was this spelling bee.
Because of this post I googled the spelling bee skit, and it's been making me and my family happy ever since. I'm amazed at the speller's ability to keep a straight face.

You know what's funny? I rarely watch SNL--hadn't watched it for years. But now every now and then I will watch it with one of my boys while we're up waiting for the other one to come home. And still, in the maybe two episodes I have watched, I caught Lazy Sunday, Spelling Bee and the Needlers. It's like when you watch only one episode of any given sitcom and inevitably when you watch it again like a year later it happens to be the rerun of that one show. What's up with that, really?
ReplyDeleteIn any case here are my two cents about SNL. Every sketch is either brilliant and hysterically funny or it's smutty and stupid. Nothin' else in between. I usually have to get up and turn off the TV at some point in order to protect my young. Why can't they just stick with be brilliant all the time? It doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it?
