14 - Dave + Betsy

For the month of November I’ve decided to post each day about a person or people who have influenced my life for good. There’s no way I could include each and every person in one month or even one year, and for that I hope you’ll forgive me. This year, especially, has brought an acute awareness of the kindness and generosity which surrounds me and my kids, so here’s one attempt at giving thanks.

14 – Dave + Betsy

It’s my stepdad and my ma.

By the time these two were married I had already moved out and away. They’re going on 19 years of marriage. High-five, you two.

I always used to say I think it would be crazy-hard to be married for almost 20 years and then be divorced, and THEN remarry and combine families. It’s still something I can’t really wrap my mind around (that last part, I mean) (ZING).

It’s been neat to see how the house I grew up in has changed over the years as they went from combining their two families to being empty nesters. I walk in and it isn’t the house I grew up in. I’m not saying that as anything other than an observation (and, let’s be honest: it’s been 19 years, it shouldn’t be the house I grew up in). It’s theirs, and I like what they’ve done with the place.

They both work in the medical field, which is a super-helpful quality to have in parents. Dave loves music and is an impressive piano and organ player. The tale goes, he was supposed to go to Juilliard but decided last-minute he wanted music to be his hobby rather than his career. Betsy likes to combine comedy and acting, like with her Bag Lady thing. You know the one.

They work a lot and go on vacations to cool places, and they’ve got some wicked-good-looking grandkids. And kids. Totally good-looking kids.

They’re generous and kind and look to help and serve where they can, and I’m grateful for all they’ve done, and continue to do, for me and for my kids.

Thanks, Dave + Betsy. I love you.

They sound fabulous. I'm so glad you have them...and they have you.
